Meet Laura

Laura provides Early Intervention Services in Greenville County.

Hi all!!!  I am a people-person who loves writing, volleyball, and complimenting strangers in coffee shops. I was born in Columbia and spent most of my life there until I moved to Ontario at 17. I completed my senior year of high school and all four years of university in Canada. While obtaining my degree in Psychology with a minor in Family and Child Studies at the University of Guelph, I took special interest in inclusivity and intersectionality. My engagement with the content taught me that all struggles are interconnected. To address one, we often have to address many. I witnessed the philosophy in action while working in a house for children with disabilities. Their growth and development was directly related to the services, community, and support they had access to. This led to me engaging with many social change groups throughout the past four years that provided me with education and insight on how social policies affect families. The education I received in this area sparked my desire to work in Early Intervention – I want to be someone who helps prevent and reduce as much social, mental, and developmental harm as possible. Research shows one way of doing so is through community and social support. Having community and social support are major factors in building resilience in children and their families. Early Intervention is one of the ways I participate in facilitating resilience in my community, and I can not wait for you to be part of it!

Background

Education:

  • Bachelors in Psychology with a concentration in family and child studies from the University of Guelph

I’ve worked with children since I was thirteen years old. After my first babysitting gig, I immediately knew I would always want to work with children. During my time in university, I worked at a house for children with intellectual, mental, and physical disabilities. Some of my favorite experiences with them involved learning the ways they communicate and expanding their ability to tell us their wants and needs. A significant part of my education focused on the importance and impact of family systems for children's development. This content influenced my decision to choose a career that worked with the family system. I hope to use my knowledge and passion to help you and your family, in whatever way that may look like!
